History
- It is clearly recorded that, in 1884 the departing British Consul-General
Gould was given a Siamese cat by the Siamese king as a farewell gift. This
was considered a great honor since the cat came from those bred in the
palace by the royal family The progeny of this cat, given to Consul-General,
was exhibited by his sister, Mrs. Lilian Gould Velvey at the 17th Crystal
Palace Show in Oct. 1885. Photographs of these cats show they were large,
robust and round headed cats, solid and muscular. They captured the
immediate attention of the public and by 1950 were considered the most
popular breed in the United States. As time passed and cat ‘fashions’
changed, the breed standard shifted to a more elongated and wedge-headed
‘modern’ Siamese we see in the show ring today. While the modern Siamese
enjoys the limelight, many people still support the traditional old-fashion
Siamese and continue to maintain the traditional breeding.
Colors and Coats Types Available - Seal Point, Chocolate Point, Blue
Point and Lilac Point
Grooming and Care - Siamese require little grooming
and shed less than most cats.
Best
Suitable Environment - Siamese are not sedentary and need the space to
play. However they can thrive in a small space as long as opportunities for
exercise are provided such as the delight of a ping pong ball in a dry and
enclosed shower stall.
Personality Traits - Old Fashion Traditional Siamese
are calm, alert and according to most experts, the most intelligent of all
breeds along with their cousins, Balinese. They love to interact with every
facet of human life, will watch television, play games, like fetch, and
learn tricks. As such they do best in households where they have plenty of
companionship from humans and or other pets, their favorites being small
dogs, although they can readily live with many other species including large
birds.
The finest examples of Traditional Siamese are chunky,
rounded headed cats. whose body color, particularly as kittens, is light
while their point color a clear contrast and their eyes should be a dark
blue.
