Ocicat Cat - Breed Profile
- The Ocicat originated in the 1960s and was the result of an experimental crossing between a Siamese and an
Abyssinian. The goal was to obtain the Abyssinian color in the pointed areas of the Siamese. Instead, spotted kittens were the result. People soon began to seek out these uniquely beautiful kittens and
eventually they became the Ocicat. Later, the American Shorthair was added to the gene pool to give the evolving breed substance and size.
In spite of the name, there is not, and never has been, any Ocelot--or any other wild cat--in the Ocicat. They are purely a man made spotted breed created by the careful selective breeding of their dedicated breeders.
Colors and Coats Types Available - Tawney, Chocolate, Cinnamon, Fawn, Lavender, Blue, Ebony Silver, Fawn Silver, Blue Silver, Chocolate Silver, Cinnamon Silver, Lavender Silver
Grooming and Care - The Ocicat is a wash and wear kitty! A soft rubber curry comb or glove is all that is needed to keep their coat in great shape.
Best Suitable Environment - These cats do not like to be left alone. The become very attached to their people and want to be with them. In that, they are very doglike. A kitty companion is
recommended if the owner is away from home a lot during the day. We don't
recommend that ANY cat be allowed to roam outside.
Personality Traits - Very people oriented, energetic, curious, easily gets along with other cats and pets. Toy driven in that play is their life--- puurfect for the agility ring.
We have all the wild spots, WITHOUT the wild attitude!!
